WSLL v Belarus – 4th August 2012

On the 4th August WSLL played host to 12 boys and girls from Belarus for the 4th year running. This is done in cooperation with the Mid Surrey Link charity. The Mid Surrey Link charity each year arranges a one month holiday for a group of Belarusian children. The children were given football boots and socks from our stock. They then received some pre-match training following which they were matched up with a number of WSLL players to and had a mini tournament. After the tournament there was a presentation ceremony with the exchange of medals as well as recieving a water bottle, pedometer and football. The morning was finished off with lunch from the Cafe. Thank you to an anonymous donor for making this possible.

We lookforward to welcoming another group of Belarusian children to WSLL in 2013.

The Belarusian people are suffering more than ever from the legacy of the world’s worst nuclear disaster in 1986. The radioactive fallout was 90 times greater than Hiroshima. Belarus was the country worst hit by the disaster, with 70% of the fallout landing on its territory, around one-fifth of its area seriously affected and approximately 90% of its area affected in some way. More than 2,500 square kilometres of arable land were taken out of use permanently. Over 130,000 people have been evacuated from the most highly contaminated territories.

The children are invited over to the UK for a month and it is estimated that the one month holiday in the UK with clean air, water and food can increase each child’s life expectancy by two years.
